The essay must be 6-8 paragraphs in length, have a clear thesis statement, and be well developed with general analysis about how authors use the elements of fiction and support from the readings to qualify your thesis. You can only use 3-4 total quotes in the essay, and these must come from a minimum of 2 short stories. You can use 3, but 2 different short stories is the minimum. The essay must also have an introduction and conclusion and be a persuasive (argument) piece of writing, not a regurgitation of the readings. You need to consider the various elements of fiction; take into consideration plot, language, dialogue, setting, imagery, symbolism, etc. You should also consider the era in which the piece was written, as well as societal constructs that period in history. The essay must show critical thinking. Read the prompt you select carefully. Again, do not summarize or focus solely on the texts/short stories. Avoid writing in first and second person. The essay must be in MLA format and include titles in quotation marks, page numbers, and parenthetical in-text citations. A Works Cited page is not needed. Prompt: Self-actualization is something most human beings strive for. To be able to realize one’s full potential can lead to a rewarding life. History has shown how certain groups of people are not allowed to become self-actualized because of either their gender or socioeconomic standing. How do authors address and develop the concept of denial of self-actualization through the medium of fiction? Use support in the form of analysis of authors in general and quotes from: “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin), “The Metamorphosis” (Kafka), and/or “The Yellow Wallpaper”(Gilman).
