The physical properties of pure substances may lead to limited uses of these solutions. For example, as described in your text, water’s temperature range limits its use, as it has a freezing point at 0 °C and boiling point of 100 °C. A common additive to keep water from freezing is the addition of ethylene glycol, aka “antifreeze.” The role of antifreeze is critical for automobiles, especially in areas with cold conditions. Fortunately, we are able to manipulate a solution’s behavior by applying the concept of colligative properties. Colligative properties are the physical changes that result from adding solute to a solvent.
In this assignment, you will write a 500-word essay discussing one real-world application in which we alter the colligative properties of a substance for our benefit. You may choose from:
osmotic pressure, or
vapor pressure, or
freezing point depression, or
boiling point elevation.
Be sure to discuss the following in an expository essay:
What colligative property is being affected in your example? Why did you select it?
Summarize the characteristics of the selected colligative property.
What is the alteration being proposed?
How does this alteration change the solution’s properties?
Is the rate of reaction affected by any of the alterations proposed?
Summarize what you have learned about this alteration.
