Part 1: Select a Social Problem
You may select any social problem we discussed in class (poverty, crime, unemployment, homelessness, economic inequality)
Part 2: Curate Works
Find two works of “art” that explore your selected social problem. They can all be the same medium, or can be a combination (i.e. four poems would work as well as a poem, a painting, a song, and movie scene).
Part 3: Create an Original Work
Create an original piece of “art” that addresses your social problem. You DO NOT need to be a master artist to get full points on this section of the project. This experience should be fun and creative. You can create any medium of “art” you would like. Poems, drawings, rewriting song lyrics, short story, op-ed, meme, etc. The most important aspect of Part 3 is that you must submit original work.
Part 4: Explain your Anthology
Write at least 2 pages explaining your project. Include explanations to the following questions:
1. Why did you select the social problem you chose?
2. Explain why this is a social problem, who does this problem affect, and potential solutions offered by both sides of the political spectrum, if they have offered any.
3. Include links or pictures of the works of art you’ve chosen. Then, describe each piece of art, how it is connected to your social problem, and what insights viewers gain about the social problem and the broader social context of the issue.
4. Include your personal art piece. Explain your piece of art, how it is connected to the social problem, and what insights you hope viewers will gain about the social problem and the broader social context of the issue. Describe the inspiration and thought-process behind the piece as well.
5. Write a conclusion and answer the following questions: Why should individuals care about the issue? What can be done? What is society currently doing? How does examining this issue through art and research make you a better person/sociologist?
