Non Medical Prescribing – Case Study – Flucloxacillin.

Patient information Elderly male patient on the community nursing caseload for chronic ulceration to legs. Right leg has recently been treated for local infection with antimicrobial dressings, but this appears to be spreading on assessment. Ulcerated area now has purulent discharge, increased erythema and is tender to touch. As the assessor, the non- medical prescriber (the author) has decided to prescribe a course of flucloxacillin 500mg four times a day for one week. Patient history – has capacity, no drug allergies, lives alone, independent but housebound due to limited mobility. Case study must detail the consultation process utilising the RAPID-CASE Consultation Method (Gould and Bain, 2022), and this must also combine elements from the ‘prescribing pyramid’ (NPC, 1999), and the competency framework for all prescribers – Royal Pharmaceutical Society (2021). The evidence base for choosing flucloxacillin for wound infection should be explored – NICE guidelines and Wounds UK useful sources for this information. Please see attachments.
