A grading rubric is available at the bottom of these instructions. Directions: Choose ONE of the following prompts and write a thoughtful, coherent essay on your chosen subject. Some of these are compare & contrast-style essays, others are more freeform and ask you to develop a discussion post into a paper. Feel free to use any of the supplemental materials in the Brightspace modules to support your paper. Also, review the posts in the Discussion Forums. Many of these topics have been discussed in the forums. ***You are expected to incorporate direct quotes from the readings in your paper, along with full MLA/Chicago citations (in-text and end notes/works cited), to support your thesis. ***Secondary (scholarly) sources are encouraged, but not required. JSTOR is a good source for secondary sources. You can access JSTOR through the URI online library. Topic Options include (choose one): Aristophanes and the Present Day – choose ONE of the five Aristophanes plays which we have read and relate it to a present-day example. How does the way in which Aristophanes lampoons his current political figures or situations compare to the way in which modern political figures or situations are lampooned in today’s comedies/satires? Aristophanes and Women – consider Aristophanes’ treatment of women in BOTH the Lysistrata and the Thesmophoria plays. What stereotypical ideas about women did Aristophanes portray his male characters as possessing? What were the women really like? Do you think Aristophanes himself admired or disliked women? Aristophanes and the Poets – consider Aristophanes’ treatment of tragedy in BOTH the Thesmophoria and the Frogs. How does he portray the poets themselves in each comedy? Does Aristophanes hold tragic poets in high regard or not? Old Comedy vs. New Comedy — what are the major distinctions between the two styles of comedy? Do you think each style is appropriate for its time & place? Why do you think things changed so much?
