I propose conducting an ethical audit of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) 510 S Vermont Ave Los Angeles, CA 90020. This organization is based in Los Angeles County, California. I chose this agency since I am currently employed at DCFS and work closely with this population. There are tons of research based on audits that were available to the public online. Therefore, there is no need to interview two individuals from a proposed site.
Reasons for Selecting LA County DCFS:
1. Documented Disparities: Research and reports have consistently emphasized disparities in outcomes for families of color and children in foster care managed by LA County DCFS. These disparities include higher removal rates, longer stays in foster care, and lower reunification rates for children of color.
2. Significant Scale and Impact: As one of the largest child welfare agencies in the nation, LA County DCFS serves a vast and diverse population. The agency’s practices and policies have a significant impact on the lives of thousands of children and families, making it critical to ensure ethical and equitable practices.
3. Historical Concerns: There have been numerous reports and investigations into the department’s practices, including issues related to systemic bias, insufficient support for families of color, and challenges in meeting the needs of diverse communities.
4. Public Accountability: Given the public and media scrutiny, there is a strong case for an independent ethical audit to provide transparency and accountability. This can help restore public trust and ensure that the department is addressing the issues effectively.
5. Commitment to Reform: LA County DCFS has expressed a commitment to reform and improvement. An ethical audit can support these efforts by identifying specific areas of concern and providing actionable recommendations to encourage a more equitable and just system. I think it would be helpful to integrate education/training within this rationale. For example, I will include a focus on education and training related recommendations.
By focusing on LA County DCFS, the ethical audit can address critical issues related to racial disparities and improve outcomes for all children and families served by the department. There is no need for the two interviews in final assignment instructions as this audit will be based on research
